In 2022, the world generated 62 million tonnes of e-waste. Africa is one of the main destinations for exported e-waste, yet it generates the least per person of any region.

Most of that waste starts the same way: a device gets replaced before its life is over. A newer model drops. An upgrade cycle resets. The old device goes into a drawer, then a landfill. Black Mint exists at that exact moment: to intercept it. Every phone, laptop, and tablet we mint is a device that does not become waste. Minting a Device Saves More Than Money.

Before a new smartphone is even switched on, it has already produced nearly 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions it will cause in its lifetime, according to a study by France's ADEME and Arcep. By the time materials are mined, components are assembled, and the device ships across the world, the environmental cost is already locked in. The device exists. The damage is done.

Egypt generated an estimated 692,000 tonnes of e-waste in 2022 (UN Global E-waste Monitor 2024). Almost none of it is documented as formally recycled. Black Mint is a prevention company, not a recycling company. The best thing that can happen to a device is that it stays in use.

At Black Mint, minted is not a grade. It is a standard. Every device we sell meets it or it does not leave our warehouse.
